Declarations of non-impediment to marry

When you plan to marry abroad, many countries will require you to produce a document in which you declare that you are not already married and that nothing prevents you from entering into your intended marriage. This document receives several names, like Declaration of Non-Impediment to Marry, Statutory Declaration of Single Status, Affidavit of Intended Marriage, etc.
Whichever the name, what the authorities of the country are requesting from you is a document in which you state some of your personal details, as well as your intention to marry in the country in question and a confirmation that you are not married or that any previous marriage has been has been validly dissolved.
Some countries have additional requirements and you will need to state information like your place of residence for the last 2 years, your parents' names or your religion.
The document usually has the form of an Affidavit (i.e. a sworn declaration) or a Statutory Declaration (which is a declaration fulfilling certain formal requirements).
In either case, the document will need to be signed by you in the presence of a person who can attest and confirm your identity and your signature. For some countries, your identity can be attested by any UK Solicitor. For others, you will require an attestation by a Notary Public.
The authorities of some countries will want to see a Certificate of Non-Impediment issued by a UK Registrar. This document is obtained from your local registrar.
